Equity compensation can take several forms:
Stock Options: These give employees the right to purchase a specific number of shares at a predetermined price, known as the exercise or strike price, within a certain time frame. Employees benefit if the company's stock price exceeds the strike price.
Restricted Stock Units (RSUs): RSUs are company shares granted to employees as part of their compensation, subject to vesting conditions. Once vested, employees receive actual shares, which they can sell or hold.
Employee Stock Purchase Plans (ESPPs): These plans allow employees to purchase company shares at a discounted rate, often through payroll deductions over a specified offering period.
Performance Shares: These shares are granted based on the company's performance or the achievement of specific goals. Employees earn shares if the performance metrics are met.
